Literally none of them. Th ere isn’t really a national beer. But if there is, it’s VB.
I went to an Australian bar in France and it was like a weird caricature of Australia.

I learned a long time ago.
Don’t call a Canadian, American.
Don’t call a Kiwi, an Aussie.
Don’t offer a Fosters, to an Aussie.

having grown up in the shadow of the XXXX brewery, I can confirm, VB does seem to be the national brew of choice despite it having the filthy southern state’s title right in the name.

I quite fancy living in Victoria, though I don’t think I’d feel safe with the Victorian Police protecting me. Lol.

Oh, boy. Just wait until you learn about Outback Steakhouse :)
Seriously, though — here’s something fun. Jemaine Clement (to fill in the Podeans: He is a Kiwi) doing a series of ads for Outback that only ran for a few months in the early 2000s. This was before he was famous for Flight of the Conchords, Moana, other acting, etc.
The bonus here is that he’s doing a caricature of Australians in the same vein that the restaurant itself is a caricature, plus it plays into Conchords and the whole ANZ rivalry/confusion . To me, that’s half the humor. There’s about 10 of these commercials , IIRC.

Aussies we used to drink with college in heavy Australian accent:
“Fosters. Australian for piss.”

Lol that is so nuanced. Where are they? Are they an nz thing? American?
![]() 08/19/2019 at 14:11 |

Even in Queensland. Up there maybe xxxx and great Northern reign supreme. But... Vb is still on tap everywhere you go.
And its stronger.

What bloody town mate? And they came all the way to Vic rather than just Cairns or something?
![]() 08/19/2019 at 14:12 |

You are correct.
I've accidentally asked many Canadians on this trip I'd they're American. I should know better. I don't know what's come over me

American, plus some in Canada I think. Many hundreds of locations — they’re probably the best-known mainstream steakhouse in the country. You’d be hard-pressed to find someone who hasn’t heard of them anywhere in the country.
I just always thought it a little weird that someone made a theme restaurant about Australia (no offense intended at all. I have seen cheesy US-themed restaurants in the UK before. Facepalm. ) . Of course, the chain first got popular when the world was gripped with Paul Hogan Fever.
Thankfully the servers don’t try to affect an accent or a persona, or anything weird like that. But there are boomerangs hanging on the wall, just for context.

Haha, that’s what this place was like! Australians really don’t give a fuck about a boomerang. I haven’t seen one in years.
It is very strange that they’d bother. It’s sort of cool though. The vb went down alright, and they had lunar Park painted on the wall which is near where I live.
I've been away from aus for a month. Even a weird off-beat attempt at home feels good.

you won’t believe me, but... I was born in the town of Foster!
my grandparents had a farm there. but yeah, Cairns was the spot for other hospital stops.

The safe bet is to ask what part of Canada they are from,
the English Canadians will say where they are from,
the French Canadians will point out they are French Canadians and
the Americas will often say thank you, then tell you they are American and where they are from.

I have seen cheesy US-themed restaurants in the UK before. Facepalm.
we also do Australian themed ones such as ‘Walkabout’.
The one in my city.

I go with North American instead of Canadian or American, its the easy way out.
![]() 08/19/2019 at 23:03 |

Once....for a short golden age back in the 1970's, a small but significant subset of the Australian community known as Tasteless New South Welshpersons chose to drink a beer branded as Fosters Lager as a counterpoint to the more traditional Tooheys New.
In the early 80s....international tourists only ever went to Sydney and the marketing gods found a way for Fosters to escape its confines.
We decided it was best for all to just let it go. Now it haunts us everywhere else...but here.
![]() 08/19/2019 at 23:05 |

As an Australian, I wouldn't choose to drink VB these days either. But the very thought of drinking Fosters again would make me ask for soda water instead...
![]() 08/20/2019 at 02:54 |

And behind every Walkabout bar ...a Kiwi. It must burn.

I have been known to partake of Furphy Ale and most other of Little Creatures output! Also some of the James Squire brand, predominantly Hop Their.

Nice nice. We have a James squire brew house or two in melb. That's the place to get it.

I know it well from my past Melbourne visits...
These days, I am awaiting the reopening of one of the town pubs. A local family of German background with a long history of local tourism and food service have bought it and intend on doing their food and their own brews....
